Assessment IN learning

What exactly is Assessment IN Learning? Or, As we say in Wales Assessau Mewn Dysgu

In developing the curriculum in Wales, the Welsh government stated that assessment should be “indistinguishable” from the learning process. In other words, it should be planned for, taught and integrated into all aspects of teaching, unlike assessment ‘of’ learning, which happens at the end of the topic or module and is based on what the learner has learnt and is done by the teacher. Assessment ‘for’ and ‘In’ learning should be future-based so that the learner can address the next steps in their education.

So, what is the difference between assessment ‘for’ and ‘in’ learning? Many teachers may argue that they are the same. But at RLC, we draw a key distinction between them so that teachers and school leaders really understand when they are leading AiLin in the classroom. AIL requires that the teacher and pupils take on different roles. It is not as simple as “feedback’ or using ‘Self’ and ‘Peer’ Assessment’ it requires a blended approach, developing a strong classroom culture of talk, and applying strategies.

The simplest way to consider AiL, as the diagram shows, is if the pupils are not at the heart of the assessment process, then this is not AIL. This approach empowers the learner, develops oracy and metacognitive skills, higher-order thinking and lessens teacher workload.

How to implement Assessment
In Learning?

The learner needs to understand where they are in their learning and where they need to go and have a range of strategies to get there. The teacher acts more as a facilitator and guide in the learning, whilst the learner takes greater responsibility. The critical fact is that time is planned into learning for reflection. Both on the metacognitive aspect of the learning and also the task.

This is a very simple concept that leads to accelerated progress. But we strongly suggest you look into this before introducing it to your class or your school, as this works best as a whole-school approach.

Whilst this concept was developed to meet the needs of the Welsh Curriculum, it is, in fact, applicable to all countries and all curricula. If you would like to find out more on how we can support you develop your assessment practices please get in touch.
